Talk is central to how people perform in practice. It is not just the means through which we converse and interact with each other, it is also how we think and engage with the challenges we face. But there are two big problems with talk.

First, it comes easily and largely unconsciously. We take it for granted that we’re doing it competently, but our actual impacts are often unintended, unproductive and uncorrected. Secondly, people use the nine ‘voices’ - the resources of an excellent communicator - in very diverse, individualised ways, which cause further misunderstandings, miscommunications and tensions.
